1.Internal factor like sex , anti-gonadotropin, hormone, Pituitary Gland Disorder or heredity
2.External factor such as eating behavior, food and dog’s routine activities.

Most reason for being overweight is over feeding or lack of exercise or both.

Internal body factor that cause of fat dog

  • Decreasing of Resting Metabolic Rate, RMR
  • Hyperadrenocorticism cause of Pituitary Gland Disorder
  • Being Sterile since 6-12 months
  • Dog over 7 years will reduce the energy burning 20%
  • Heredity, Some breed such as Cocker, Labrador, and Terrier are easily to get fat. Some breed such as Boxer, Fox, and Terrier Yorkshire are hard to get fat.

Diagnosis

  • It is important to consult with veterinarian about dog’s weight. Some dogs may have swell symptom or  Pituitary Gland Disorder
  • Observe from Assessment of body condition such as Thin, underweight, Ideal, Overweight , Obese

Obese condition, We can not touch its bone because there are covered with fat and muscle. Cannot see curve around dog’s waist.
 

Solution

  • Short term solution is  food control and exercise.  Weight control is the long term solution.
  • Key factor for Weight control
  • Behavior modification by  food control , reduce number of its meal and quantity.
  • Exercise such as swimming, walking and running.

Required program for Weight control

  • Provide Weight control Program such as setting  target to lose weigh 1-2% per week.
  • Provided low- fat diets food to your dogs
  • Control calories amount that should not more than  60-70% of  its metabolism.
  • Reduce snack
  • Provide exercise program
  • Control weight
  • Regularly exercise and strictly control calories amount
